ATSP TeleUpdates: Innovations in Telemental Health cover

The "ATSP TeleUpdates: Innovations in Telemental Health" Conference Proceedings are available for purchase on CD-ROM. This CD-ROM includes audio recordings and PowerPoint presentations from the two hour long conference which took place in January of 2003.

Sessions include:

  • Point-Counterpoint: What Services are Psychiatrists Comfortable Delivering Via Telecommunications Technology?
A group of psychiatrists debate the possibilities and limitations of telemental health. What services are ideally suited to remote care? Are there situations or diagnoses that should NOT be handled via telehealth, such as child psychiatry, suicide evaluation, or sex offender evaluation? What works and what doesn't?

Rupert Goetz, MD, Medical Director, Clackamas County Mental Health, Oregon and Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Oregon Health Sciences University, Portland, Oregon, USA

    E. Richard Dorsey, MD, MBA, Medical Director, Department of Mental Health, County of Riverside, Riverside, California, USA

Kathleen Myers, MD, MPH, Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, University of Washington School of Medicine, and Director, Consultation-Liason Psychiatry Clinical Director, Telemedicine Program, Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center

  • Home Telemental Health: Bringing Mental Health Services to the Consumer
Rehabilitation of chronic health conditions requires long-term therapeutic intervention to ensure that the patient achieves optimal functional and psychosocial outcomes. Pressures from third party payers to reduce inpatient lengths of stay plus shortages of specialists in underserved areas have led to innovative home-based alternatives such as telemedicine applications. Dr. Clark outlines how her own program uses home telehealth, where it has succeeded and failed and where it is headed in the future.

Pamela G. Clark, PhD, Director of Clinical Development, INTEGRIS Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation Hospital, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA

  • Resources for Information and News about Telemental Health
Speakers provide a guide to web sites, reports, publications, and other industry telemental healthcare resources. They also address how to find information about vendors, programs, research, and telemental health legislation.

Nancy Brown, MLS, Project Director for the Telemedicine Information Exchange, Portland, Oregon, USA

Marlene Maheu, PhD, President and CEO, Pioneer Development Resources; Director of Telehealth, California School of Professional Psychology, San Diego, California, USA

Prices have been discounted 30% due to technical difficulties encountered while recording the audio portion of the program. While the audio is perfectly understandable, it is slightly over-modulated, which causes it to sound a little fuzzy.
