A relatively new clinical application for
telemedicine-related technologies involves forensic examination. Its
primary use has been in cases, usually referred from law enforcement,
where sexual or physical assault is alleged, especially of children.
Using low-bandwidth audiographic technology that allows clinicians to
share images and discuss results with forensic experts has the potential
to improve the evidence-gathering process, strengthen valid criminal
cases, reduce court costs (through avoided trials) and shorten turnaround
time.
