Highlights of the 1998 report
According to the 1998 Report on U.S. Telemedicine Activity produced by
the Association of Telemedicine Service Providers, the American
telemedicine industry continues to grow at a brisk pace. The data indicate
that while certain specialty areas continue to dominate the telemedicine
industry —mental health, cardiology, orthopedics, radiology and
dermatology—the types of facilities, programs, organizations,
technologies and applications used to deliver these services have expanded
and diversified.
Trends
While telemedicine is being used primarily for specialist
consultation and second opinions, other applications are gaining ground,
such as:
- The management of chronic illness
- Emergency/triage
- Surgical follow up
- Diagnostic exam interpretation
- Home heath care
- Non-clinical uses such as for distance learning, grand rounds,
administrative meetings
In terms of activity levels, there are increases in both the numbers of
programs and numbers of teleconsultations. Nearly 1/5 of all clinical
activity can be attributed to prison telemedicine, which suggests problems
with the current reimbursement structure, as well as pointing to the
potential of telemedicine as a vehicle for cost savings at the state
level. Thus, while growth is occurring, there are still questions about
the distribution of that growth, and who is benefiting.
