The ATSP's fourth
Report on U.S. Telemedicine Activity
since 1997 analyzes key statistics
about the state of the telehealth industry.
The report highlights industry trends and promising applications.
The ATSP identified 206 telemedicine programs,
up from 170 in 1999. Responding to the survey were 82 programs
operating out of 1,278 sites – an average of about 16 per telemedicine network.
Trends identified by the research show:
|
 |
-
Overall industry growth but
at a slower rate than in previous years, with telemedicine
systems being used extensively in areas
other than the delivery of patient care
-
Increased network sizes
-
Extensive educational use of telemedicine systems
-
Diverse use of telemedicine
applications, settings and technologies,
suggesting that the conventional model of specialist
consultation delivered to rural hospitals describes
only a fraction of what is occurring
-
Use of telemedicine for a broader range of clinical specialties
-
Wider acceptance of store-and-forward technologies,
although interactive video is
still the most common means of delivering care remotely.
Many programs use a combination of these technologies
The detailed appendices include geographic maps of telemedicine program
distributions, clinical specialty specific information,
detailed master table of 82 programs and
contact information for 206 identified telemedicine programs.
